Define the equipment and the capacity question

Send accessible exterior photographs, existing service information and a list of selected equipment. Include any separate buildings, subpanels or other distribution that the service supplies. Future ideas can be discussed, with assumptions kept separate from the equipment being installed now.
Understand what the service proposal includes
A service project can involve equipment and coordination beyond replacing an interior panel. Ask the proposal to identify the metering, service, panel and distribution work actually included and any existing equipment proposed to remain. Clarify responsibilities for utility coordination, access, interruptions and other trades for the property. Comparing proposals is easier when they describe the same installation boundaries and confirmed loads.
Review the supply and the loads together
Service capacity concerns the incoming supply arrangement, not simply the number of unused breaker positions. An evaluation considers the existing installation and the loads it is intended to serve. Selected equipment and intended use provide a firmer basis than an assumed service size or another property's installation.

Service-specific questions
Does a full panel prove I need a larger service?
No. Distribution space and overall supply capacity are different questions. The actual circuits, loads and equipment condition need evaluation before the appropriate work is chosen.
Will an upgrade increase the capacity of existing branch circuits?
No. Retained circuit wiring and protective equipment still have their own limits. New equipment needs an appropriate circuit as well as a suitable upstream supply.
What information supports a service evaluation?
Existing equipment information, selected appliance and mechanical specifications, and loads in separate buildings or downstream panels. Identify future ideas separately from equipment confirmed for the project.
